While many fashion magazines today feature the ultra-thin, “starving model” look in their ads and photos, my Latina patients at Robles Plastic Surgery tell me they’d rather look like actresses with fuller bodies such as Sofia Vergara, Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria or Salma Hayek.

I am also seeing women from other cultures come in with a picture of one of these entertainers and asking me if I can help them achieve that look. Allure fashion and beauty magazine took a poll in 2011 which showed that 85 percent of respondents believed that increased diversity in this country has changed what the public considers beautiful. It seems that popular Latina celebrities are changing the U.S. beauty ideal.
To stereotype any culture is never a good thing. Latinas have a wide range of body types, depending on the areas of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America their genes originate. However, most Latinas want to emulate a voluptuous body, and are more likely than other cultures to come in and request plastic surgery for breast augmentation, buttock enhancement and abdominal liposuction to create the “hourglass” look they see in the entertainment world.
Today’s Latinas are different from other ethnic groups in that they have no desire to attain the “Barbie doll” or starving model look that our society’s media promotes, but do want to look young and sexy at any age. Youthful appearance and sensuality, aging gracefully and confidently are most important to them.
Spanish-language media plays an important role in Latinas’ desire to look sexy. They regularly watch popular prime-time soap operas, or telenovelas, which showcase women who are voluptuous and show it off by wearing sexy blouses, skirts and pants. Even Spanish-language news and sports shows feature Latinas with amazing figures with well-defined curves.
Latinas also come to Robles Plastic Surgery to do less invasive cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX® and injectable dermal wrinkle fillers. These are more affordable ways to look younger. I believe another reason more Latinas are coming in for surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures is that they are entering the workforce in greater numbers, and many are starting their own businesses. Thus, their economic power is increasing and they know how to access financing.
